Why the Murraylands

The regional economy of the Murraylands is characterised by a high level of diversification. Agriculture in the region ranges from broad-acre cropping and extensive livestock production to intensive horticulture and intensive livestock production.

Approximately 25% of South Australia’s dairy production comes from an area along the Murray River from Mannum to Meningie. Pig production in the area represents about 30% of total production in the State. The intensive poultry industry is of comparable importance. In addition there are over 50 different types of horticultural crops grown in the region. There are also approximately 30% of South Australia’s onions and potatoes grown in the region; and 30% of  the State’s glasshouse industry (tomatoes, cucumbers and capsicums) is located in the Murraylands.

Over recent years a number of small and medium sized manufacturing establishments have developed within the region. These include food processors, machinery manufacturers and irrigation equipment. Of significance is the emergence of plastics based manufacturing, hay exporters, timber  treatment and light metal manufacturing businesses.
