Horticulture

Provides 23% of gross food revenue of Murraylands economy. While tomatoes were traditionally the crop which made Murray Bridge a prime tomato growing region more recent diversification into potatoes, onions and carrots has become a new focus for irrigators. Lettuce, herbs and salad vegetables have been successfully grown and marketed by Swanport Harvest at Murray Bridge. Mushroom growing is expanding significantly in the region. At Mannum the onion industry has expanded through RivaPak and RIN-PRA. Olive production has expanded in Mid-Murray.  Garlic growing is an expanding and substantial industry. Recent growth in potato, onion, carrot and broccoli production has been supported by underground water in the Parilla and Pinnaroo region.

OPPORTUNITIES

Potential expansion in horticulture in Prescribed Wells Area may follow reduced water allocations from River Murray. Opportunities will emerge for investment in intensive horticulture when technical solutions to re-use of water from the Rural City of Murray Bridge, T&R Pastoral and other high water users are developed.
