Aquaculture
Investment in aquaculture can result from the water re-use research project currently facilitated by the Memorandum of Understanding between Flinders University and Murraylands Regional Development Board. Research will be undertaken through the Bedford Project which is located in the Coorong Council area. This project will address and refine the process of taking highly saline water through solar applications to eventual production of fish and edible algae products in addition to solar power and potable water.
OPPORTUNITIES
Prospects for intensive fish production will be tested through the Bedford Project. Aquaculture of mulloway using saline water at the Waikerie Co-operative Research Centre, which was originally researched at Bedford in the Coorong area, provides a promising model for fish commercialisation in saline water areas in the Murraylands. Murray Darling Basin Commission is currently supporting aquaculture research of native fish species with a view to re-stocking of the River Murray and eventual commercialisation. Opportunities for economic development among indigenous communities could eventuate from
this project.
